History, heritage and culture of Kota Kinabalu

The best way to get to know a city is to hit the streets and take a walk.

The KK Free Heritage Walking Tour is the perfect way to learn about the history, heritage and rich culture of Kota Kinabalu.

This guided tour takes place every Wednesday morning (including public holidays).

The walk takes you to 10 places of historical interest in the city. It takes about 2 hours and is led by a professional licensed guide who will tell you fascinating stories and answer your questions.

Important Info
  • Book the tour as soon as possible.
  • Arrive at 8.45am at the starting point.
  • Wear light clothing, walking shoes and a hat.
  • Bring drinking water.
  • The tour will be conducted in English.

The Itinerary

  1. Sabah Tourism Board Building (Starting Point)

  2. Kota Kinabalu Community Hall

  3. Australia Place
    (where Australian soldiers set up camp in 1945)

  4. Atkinson Clock Tower
    (built in the memory of Francis George Atkinson, Jesselton's first district officer who died of Malaria in December 1902)

  5. Merdeka Square
    (where the late Chief Minister Donald Stephens declared the formation of the Federation of Malaysia on 16 September 1963)

  6. Gaya Street

  7. Malaysia Monument
    (commemorating the inclusion of Sabah & Sarawak into the Federation of Malaya on 16 Sept 1963, from which date the Federation was renamed Malaysia)

  8. North Borneo War Memorial
    (for the fallen British soldiers during the World War I and the fallen Australian soldiers during the World War II)

  9. Central Market

  10. Fruits Market

  11. Kadaiku - Sabah Souvenirs & Handicrafts Shop (Ending Point)


Free Walking Tour?

A free tour is usually characterised by the fact that you leave a tip (between RM10 and RM30, or more if you wish) for the guide at the end.
