Derivatives - Beads & Lore
Curated by Jesse Joy and Ricardo Unto, Derivatives showcases a remarkable line-up of artists specializing in beadwork and jewelry design. This exhibition is a key component of Tanong: Cerita Rakyat Kita, a celebration of Sabah's rich cultural heritage and local myths organized by Asgardian Art and the Sabah Art Gallery.
Beads hold deep significance in Sabah's indigenous cultures. These small, intricately crafted objects are not just decorative; they are part of the traditions, identity and spirituality of local communities. In many of Sabah's ethnic groups, beads are used to create accessories that symbolize status, mark rites of passage and reflect cultural values. Beaded jewelry often tells stories of ancestry, belief, and the connection between nature and the divine.
The exhibition also explores lore, the rich body of myths, legends, and oral traditions that form the foundation of Sabah's cultural landscape. Passed down through generations, this lore provides a window into the beliefs, rituals and history of Sabah's diverse peoples. These stories are often intertwined with nature, spirits and the daily lives of the community, influencing their arts, customs and way of life.
Derivatives is an independent effort driven by a deep love of Sabah's culture and a shared curiosity to learn more. We invite your support in exploring and celebrating the vibrant heritage of this land and its people.
