The full title of the talk is:
The Diaries of Alexander Rankin Johnstone Dunlop, 1897-1907: Infused with Sketches of Local People and Places.
Probably the youngest cadet to serve in the British North Borneo Chartered Company[1], AR Dunlop (1868-1946) led an extraordinary life. He was the first British resident in Tawau[2] and enjoyed a remarkable 46-year career in British North Borneo.
Dunlop's diaries provide a fascinating insight into the early days of British administration, including his involvement in the pursuit of Mat Salleh[3], who posed the greatest challenge to British rule.

Mat Salleh, originally Datu Muhammad Salleh, was a prominent local chief from the Lingkabo district and the Sugut River in North Borneo. From 1894 until his death in Tambunan in 1900, he led a widespread rebellion against the British North Borneo Chartered Company, gaining support throughout Sandakan, Gaya Island, and the interior. ↩︎
