A unique double feature of documentaries capturing the essence of love, tradition and cultural exchange will be screened on Friday 13 September 2024.

This event will showcase two powerful films that bring together different perspectives from Japan and Aotearoa (New Zealand)/Palestine.

Each documentary offers an intimate look at the deep bonds between people and the vibrant cultural experiences that shape their lives.

The Netflix original documentary series My Love: Six Stories of True Love (2021) explores the deep relationships of six couples from different parts of the world (USA, Spain, Brazil, Japan, Korea, India) over the course of a year. The series tenderly captures their daily lives and the essence of their enduring love.

Episode 3 focuses on Kinuko and Haruhei in Japan. Kinuko has cared for Haruhei since they first met in an institution where he was being treated for leprosy. Now the roles are reversed as Haruhei becomes the caretaker.

The film is directed by Hikaru Toda, a director and producer based in Osaka, Japan. Toda grew up in the Netherlands and holds an MA in Visual Anthropology and Performance Making from Goldsmiths College, University of London. Her debut feature documentary, Of Love & Law (2017), won top awards at the Tokyo International Film Festival (2017) and the Hong Kong International Film Festival (2018).

The One World Project - He Ao Kotahi is a documentary that follows Māori master carver, tattoo artist, and musician Katz on his journey to Palestine. During his visit, Katz immerses himself in the wairua (spirit) and experiences the manaakitanga (hospitality) of Palestine and its people, all through a Māori perspective.

The film is directed by Roy Taoho and Paula Jones. Roy Taoho, from Aotearoa, began his career in 1998 at the age of 17, training as a Sound Producer and later working at Māori Television.

In 2008, he founded Dalaye Audio Limited, which evolved into Dalaye Media Limited in 2010. Dalaye Media Limited specializes in providing freelance video and sound recording services to various production houses and networks throughout New Zealand.

Roy is recognized for his global experience and dedication to excellence in the Film and Television industry.
