KK Wetland Free Guided Tour

The guided tour is free, but visitors must pay to enter the wetlands.

A Haven of Mangrove Biodiversity

Located in the heart of the city, the Kota Kinabalu Wetland Ramsar Site (KKWRS) is a wetland consisting of once extensive mangrove forests.

It covers an area of 24 hectares (60 acres) and is one of the last remaining patches of mangrove forest along the Kota Kinabalu coastline.

At present, 32 species of true and associated mangroves have been recorded, providing shelter and breeding grounds for more than 90 species of resident and migratory birds, as well as other wildlife such as frogs, lizards, snakes, fish, crustaceans, molluscs and insects.

Useful Tips for Exploring the Wetlands

To get the most out of your visit, we recommend that you bring the following items with you:

Boots or walking shoes

The terrain in the wetlands can be uneven and muddy, so sturdy footwear with good grip will keep you stable and protected as you explore the area.
If you don't have suitable footwear, boots can be hired at the Wetlands for RM5.

Umbrella or hat

While the wetlands offer plenty of shade from the lush vegetation, it's always wise to be prepared for changing weather conditions. An umbrella or hat will protect you from the sun or provide shelter from light rain.
If you forget to bring one, an umbrella can be hired for RM3 or purchased for RM20.

Insect repellent

With its diverse ecosystem, the wetlands are home to various insects and mosquitoes. Wearing insect repellent will help prevent unwanted bites and ensure a more enjoyable outing.
Forgotten to pack yours? No worries, you can buy insect repellent at the Wetlands for RM18.
