The Mod subculture

The Mod subculture emerged in the UK in the late 1950s and early 1960s and was defined by its fashion, music and lifestyle.

Mods were known for their sophisticated fashion, including tailored suits and narrow ties influenced by Italian and French styles.

They were avid fans of modern jazz, R&B, soul and early rock and roll. Bands such as The Who, The Small Faces and The Kinks were popular with mods.

Scooters, especially Vespa and Lambretta models, became iconic symbols of the movement, often customised for self-expression.

Mods enjoyed all-night dancing, coffee bars and stylish hangouts, emphasising urban living and individuality.

As for 'Mayday', it refers to the May Day holiday celebrated on 1 May, known as Labor Day, and its association with spring, symbolizing youth and social contestation.
