Evolution of excellence

Since its inception in 1984 as the Daily Express Sabah Marathon, Sabah's marathon tradition has evolved into a celebrated event that captures the essence of athleticism and community spirit. After a hiatus of 23 years, the Borneo International Marathon (BIM) was born in 2008. The inaugural BIM saw 529 dedicated runners take to the streets.

In 2012, the reins of the BIM were handed over to the Kinabalu Running Club. Despite the challenges, a team of just 10 volunteers ensured the continuity and growth of the event, which has captured the hearts of local and international runners alike. In 2016, the Borneo Marathon reached a milestone with over 10,000 participants from more than 50 countries.

Uniting communities, inspiring charity, and embracing adventure

Today, the Borneo Marathon is a testament to community spirit and boasts a dedicated team of over 1,000 volunteers. Since its inception in 2008, the event has contributed to 25 charities and causes both within and beyond the borders of Sabah.

Each year, the marathon route is certified by the Association of International Marathon and Distance Races (AIMS), ensuring a world-class running experience for participants.

Recognised by Runner's World Magazine as one of the 50 best running races in the world in 2018, the Borneo Marathon has become a premier destination race, showcasing the natural beauty and cultural richness of the island of Borneo. When participants lace up their shoes for this charity run, they embark on a journey through breathtaking scenery, with views of the islands of the South China Sea and the majestic silhouette of Mount Kinabalu illuminated by the rising sun.
