Children's Rights & Statelessness Woes in Sabah
“There can be no keener revelation of a society's soul than the way in which it treats its children.”
The Sabah Society will host an educational forum on "Children's Rights & Statelessness Woes in Sabah" on Thursday, 18th January, 2024, at 8pm, at its Damai Plaza premises.
Three knowledgeable speakers – Mary Anne Baltazar, founder of Advocates for Non-Discrimination and Access to Knowledge (ANAK), Dr Elaine Kong of UNICEF Malaysia Sabah, and senior lawyer Priscilla Ruth Marcus will speak on the current issue and solutions to problems.
Mary Anne Baltazar will explain the proposed 2024 Federal Constitution amendment on citizenship that was announced by Home Minister Saifuddin Nasution, that will adversely affect children of the Indigenous peoples of Sabah and Sarawak who are still stateless or hold the MyPR (Malaysian Permanent Residents Card) instead of the MyKad (Malaysian identity card).
If these amendments are implemented, they could worsen the problem, especially for children creating a lasting generational issue due to bureaucratic hurdles.
[01/19/2024: At the end of her talk Ms. Baltazar recommended to the public to go see the film Abang Adik, a fictional story testifying to the problems encountered by undocumented Malaysians]
With a focus on UNICEF mission and Child Friendly Cities Initiative, Dr Elaine Kong will highlight children's rights, wellbeing, and participation.
An expert on Family Law in the context of Sabah, Priscilla Ruth Marcus will clarify any pertinent legal administrative process from her decades of law practice experience.
